50 Years in the Making: celebrating Thirroul local Mark O’Connor’s time in the building industry

Sep 29, 2023

For Mark, building is in his blood. He began his apprenticeship straight out of school and for three years running was awarded the prestigious NSW Apprentice of the Year. He quickly progressed from a subcontracted Carpenter to Building Supervisor and then became a Construction Manager with a large project home company.

This was a high-pressure role with over 200 jobs running at any one time. Mark managed project turnover, client and subcontractor disputes and supplier performances, resolving issues in his calm and thoughtful way.

However, Mark felt his skills were being wasted, so in 2007 he and his brother Clint launched Grand Pacific Homes.

Over the years, his business has endured weather turmoil, supply chain issues, Covid and interest rate rises. Through savvy business management, Mark has ensured viability into the future, surrounded by a committed team and quality trades that share his passion.

Mark is also inspired to make a positive difference. He gets great satisfaction from obtaining a high standard of work and seeing the landmarks that he has built around town. “I get to drive past my creations every day and I know that I am leaving a solid legacy for generations to come.” This includes houses throughout the Illawarra as well as the Thirroul Surf Club building.

Happy 50th birthday Mark. Your integrity and commitment are an inspiration to your family and friends, your team at Grand Pacific Homes, your clients and the community you serve.
